Mind the Gap

Each offseason, after I finish the top starters list, I quickly list a few pitchers who were quite good in the preceding season, but did not reach the innings threshold to be included on the list. (Not fair, of course, but I have to draw the line somewhere.)

So here are a few starting pitchers who fell through the “gap”….

  • Vince Braman, Waynesboro- Vince went 5-0, 3.37 in 5 starts for the Generals, with a 1.125 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, and 6.2 K/9 in 32 innings (soooo close!)
  • Brooks Crawford, Charlottesville- 2-1, 2.01 in 4 starts, with a 1.166 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9, and 6.1 K/9 in 22 1/3 IP. Brooks was named the 3rd best prospect in the league by Baseball America, and 7th by Perfect Game.
  • Keegan James, Strasburg- 1-0, 3.41 in 5 starts, with a 1.407 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9, and 7.5 K/9 in 26 1/3 innings. #1 prospect according to PG, and #3 according to BA.
  • Frank Rubio, Front Royal- 1-0, 1.39 in 7 games (3 starts), with 1 save, a 1.244 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9, and 7.5 K/9 in 19 1/3 innings.
  • Derrick Mount, Strasburg- 3-0, 2.30 in 5 games (4 starts), 1.245 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9, and 9.6 K/9 in 27 1/3 IP
  • Christopher Hopkins, Winchester- 3-0, 1.77 in 7 games (4 starts), 1.107 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, 5.0 K/9 in 25 1/3 IP
  • Andrew Stout, Covington- 2-0, 1.20 in 3 starts, 1.133 WHIP, 5.4 BB/9, 7.2 K/9 in 15 IP
  • Malik Jones, Harrisonburg- 3-2, 2.12 in 6 games (4 starts), 1.111 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9, 5.5 K/9 in 29 2/3 IP
  • Tucker McCoy, Harrisonburg- 1-1, 2.25 in 2 starts, 1.000 WHIP, 0.8 BB/9, 8.3 K/9 in 12 IP
  • Tyler Davis, Waynesboro- 1-1, 1.66 in 7 games (5 starts), 1.290 WHIP, 5.8 BB/9, 11.6 K/9 in 21 2/3 IP
  • Mike Hanchar, Covington- 3-1, 3.00 in 7 starts, 1.152 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9, 10.4 K/9 in 33 IP (also soooo close!)

Congratulations to all these young men!
