Top 200 Draft Prospects

Each June, the Valley League has a few dozen players drafted by major league teams. (Some years many dozens.) With the draft about a month away, some outlets have started listing their top draft prospect lists.

Today we focus on Baseball America’s top 200 draft list, which includes five former Valley Leaguers. (All stats through May 9th)

30. Nate Pearson (Staunton 2016), pitcher for Central Florida JC. Nate is 5-2, 1.56, with 118 strikeouts in only 81 innings.

88. Michael Gigliotti (Covington 2015), outfielder for Lipscomb. Michael is hitting 270/442/362 in 163 at-bats. He has a crazy 42 walks on the season.

147. Garrett Cave (Staunton 2015), pitcher for Tampa. The 6-foot-4 righthander is 5-2, 4.80, with 72 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings pitched.

155. Donnie Sellers (Harrisonburg 2016), pitcher for Wake Forest. Donnie is 3-4, 4.23, with 42 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings pitched.

174. Reed Hayes (Staunton 2015), pitcher for Vanderbilt (was pitching for Walter State when he played in the Valley). Reed is 0-1, 2.87, with 7 saves and 17 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings pitched.

Stay tuned, of course- when June 12-14 rolls around, ATVL will keep everyone updated about who gets a chance to start a pro baseball career!

Best Starts in 2016 Valley League Season

Naming a hitter and pitcher of the day throughout a typical Valley League season is a ton of work, but it also means that much of the “research” is finished for later on.

Take this list, for example- the best starts in the 2016 season, ranked by game score. The list was relatively easy to compile because of previous work.

Anyway, game score is a metric invented by Bill James that gives points for different outcomes. Here’s the link to the wikipedia entry to help explain it (what kind of English teacher AM I?).

Let’s list them from “worst,” which is still fantastic, by the way, to first. The row of numbers will go like this: innings pitched-hits-runs-earned runs-walks-strikeouts.

T13. 74- Wil Hartsell, Charlottesville, vs Winchester, July 22: 7-4-1-0-1-8

T13. 74- Corey Childress, Harrisonburg, vs Covington, July 14: 8-4-2-0-1-5

T13. 74- Zach Sloan, Purcellville, vs Woodstock, June 28: 7-4-0-0-0-5

12. 75- Donnie Sellers, Harrisonburg, vs Charlottesville, June 19: 6-0-0-0-1-4

T10. 76- Garrett Richards, Strasburg, vs Woodstock, July 23: 8-2-1-1-2-4

T10. 76- Donte Lindsay, Harrisonburg, vs Purcellville, July 13: 7-4-1-1-0-11

8. 78- Alex London, Purcellville, vs Front Royal, July 3: 7-1-0-0-3-6

Pitcher of the Day

The POD is Donnie Sellers, from Harrisonburg and Wake Forest! Donnie threw 6 shutout, no-hit innings in game 2Donnie Sllers Wake Forest 2016 of the doubleheader against Charlottesville. He walked one, and struck out 4 to earn both the win and a game score of 75. (IN case you’re wondering a hit was given up after Donnie left the game, so no no-hitter.) It was his first start of the season (maybe not the last, after this showing), and he’s now 1-0, 0.81, with 13 K’s in 11 innings. For the Demon Deacons in the spring, Donnie went 5-5, 5.65 in 43 innings.
