Let’s take a quick look at what’s going on in the standings….
New Market has closed to within a game of the Cannons, with 6 games left for both teams. The doubleheader in Charlottesville was not kind for the Cannons, but Purcellville has clinched a playoff spot anyway.
Front Royal and Woodstock are on the outside right now; the Cardinals are 2 games behind the Express with 5 games left, while the River Bandits are 4 behind with 7 to play. The Bandits are in danger of missing the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Charlottesville has clinched the South Division championship already, with 6 games left. They have a chance to tie the best record since 2001, but they will have to win all 6 games. This year, in their 3rd year of existence, will be the first time the Tom Sox will make the playoffs.
Waynesboro and Harrisonburg are in a battle for 2nd place, with Staunton 3.5 games behind the Turks with 5 to play. With one more win, Staunton will clinch a tie for the 4th spot. One Brave win coupled with a Lumberjack loss will eliminate Covington from the playoffs. But Covington will not tie Rockbridge for the worst record since 2001, as the Rapids ended the 2009 season with 9 wins.
