More Transactions

There have been quite a few transactions concerning our VBL alumni in the past few weeks. Let’s get caught up, shall we?

Major League Category

  • Tommy La Stella (Haymarket 2009) was sent down to Triple-A Iowa by the Cubs, but he has since been recalled. He’s a pinch hitter off the bench.
  • Adam Liberatore (Waynesboro 2007-8) has also been up and down from the Dodgers and Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was called back up yesterday. He’s thrown very little in the majors this year so far.
  • Emilio Pagan (Harrisonburg 2010) made his major league debut for the Seattle Mariners. He pitched in one more game, and was returned to Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Cory Spangenberg (Winchester 2010) started the season in Triple-A (El Paso), but is now up and playing for the San Diego Padres.
  • Stephen Cardullo (Covington 2007) started the season with the Colorado Rockies, but has been returned to Triple-A Albuquerque.
  • Drew Rucinski (Luray 2009-10) signed with the Twins as a minor league free agent in the offseason, and started the 2017 season in Triple-A. He was called up to the Twins a few days ago, and has appeared in one major legaue game so far (and struck out 5 batters in 3 1/3 innings)

Minor League Category

  • Tyler Orris (Waynesboro 2014) has been placed on the voluntarily retired list. Tyler was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2016 draft, and hit 197/317/213 in 122 at-bats in his pro debut for Boise in the Northwest League.
  • Drew Milligan (Aldie 2013) has also voluntarily retired. Drafted in 2015 (22nd round) by Kansas City, Drew went 4-4, 5.90, with a 1.66 WHIP in 58 pro innings.
  • Jake Perkins (New Market, Staunton 2013-15) was picked in the 28th round of the 2016 draft, pitched one shutout inning, and subsequently retired. I’d love to know the story behind this one….
  • Brody Greer (Rockbridge 2012) is an interesting case. He was ATVL’s short season Pitcher of the Year in 2015, but stumbled a bit in 2016 (in only 6 games), and was released by Arizona. I saw a report that he had been signed by Miami, but I can find no proof of Brody still existing within pro ball. If he shows up, I’ll move him back to “active.”
  • D.J. Hicks (Luray 2009), fresh off his 2016 ATVL Double-A Hitter of the Year Award, retired this spring. D.J. was a 17th round draft pick in 2012, and hit 267/349/411 in 1,714 minor league at-bats.
  • Seth Harrison (Covington 2011) also retired this spring. Drafted in the 7th round in 2014 by the Giants, Seth hit 239/298/341 in 1,012 minor league at-bats.
  • Guido Knudson (Woodstock 2009) was released by the Mariners. Guido pitched in 4 games in the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers in 2015. He pitched a total of 292 1/3 innings in the minors, and went 9-16, 3.23, with 18 saves and a 1.21 WHIP.
  • Taylor Durand (Aldie 2014) has had a career very similar to Jake Perkins. Taylor was signed as a free agent in 2016, pitched 2/3 of an inning (1 hit, 2 walks, 3 unearned runs), and retired.

Free Agent Category

  • Chris Berset (Winchester 2008) is still a minor league free agent. He was drafted by the Reds in 2010, and over 1,309 at-bats in the minors, hit 225/319/309.
  • Brandon Beachy (Woodstock 2008) is also still a free agent. Brandon has struggled with injuries; in fact, I believe that he has had two Tommy John surgeries. Brandon started 48 games in the major leagues.

Disabled List Category

There are so many here, and the DL in the minors is a… uh… nebulous thing, so we’ll just list the guys unless I have more information.

  • Sean Jamieson (Front Royal 2010) (7-day DL)- Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Joe Odom (Winchester 2012) (7- day DL)- Atlanta Braves
  • Tyler Thornburg (Winchester 2008) is on the 60-day DL for the Red Sox. I was disappointed about this one- Tyler was traded to the Sox in the offseason, and was to play an important role in the bullpen. Instead, he has something going on with his shoulder.
  • Harrison Cooney (Front Royal 2012) (60-day DL)- Boston Red Sox
  • Rayan Gonzalez (Harrisonburg 2009) (60-day DL)- TJ surgery March 2017- Colorado Rockies
  •  Jorge Marban (Winchester 2009) (7-day DL)- Detroit Tigers
  • AJ Murray (Harrisonburg 2012) (7-day DL)- Minnesota Twins
  • James Reeves (Staunton 2013) (7-day DL)- New York Yankees
  • Trey Cochran-Gill (Harrisonburg 2012) (7-day DL)- Oakland A’s
  • Casey McElroy (Waynesboro 2009) (60-day DL)- San Diego Padres
  • Taylor Cox (New Market 2012)- (60-day DL)- San Diego Padres
  • Kyle McGrath (Staunton 2011)- (7-day DL)- San Diego Padres
  • Tyler Cyr (Waynesboro 2014)- (7-day DL)- San Francisco Giants
  • Brad Mills (Harrisonburg 2005)- (7-day DL)- Seattle Mariners
  • Justin Seager (Woodstock 2011)- (7-day DL)- Seattle Mariners
  • Andrew Brodbeck (Woodstock 2014)- (7-day DL)- St. Louis Cardinals
  • Reese Karalus (Aldie 2014)- (7-day DL)- Tampa Bay Rays
