According to ATVL, the 4th best reliever in the 2016 Valley League season is none other than Covington’s Nicholas Purpera, from Cumberlands!
Nicholas was all but unhittable for the ‘Jacks. He finished 1-0, 0.45, with 9 saves, a 1.050 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9, and 8.6 K/9 in 16 games and 20 innings pitched. He added 3 shutout innings and a save in the playoffs, and threw a shutout inning in the All-Star game. Nicholas finished 1st in ERA and saves from the list of potential relievers. Including the playoffs and All-Star game, Nicholas gave up runs in just 2 appearances, and did not give up an earned run in 17 straight appearances. He was named 1st team All-Valley in the postseason.
The 6-foot-3 righty went 2-1, 5.14 with 1 save in 14 relief appearances for Cumberlands in 2016. He walked 7 and struck out 18 in 21 innings.
