Everything That Happened, Tuesday July 26

Five games played last night…. and I have the sneaking suspicion that a couple of these teams didn’t try very hard. (Understandable, with the playoffs coming up on Thursday.) Let’s take a look at the outcomes.

Results

Strasburg 11, Purcellville 5 (Preview of semi-finals in North)
Charlottesville 5, Covington 0 (5 innings. 5 innings? Did it rain?)
Waynesboro 8, Staunton 0 (Preview of semi-finals in South)
New Market 17, Front Royal 2 (Rebs go out with a bang!)
Winchester 10, Woodstock 3 (Royals prepare for Front Royal; Bandits end the season 11-31)

Hitter of the Day

Tanner Poole Miss St 2016Tons of good hitting performances last night; it’s what you might expect with 61 runs scored in 5 games. Our hitter of the day is Waynesboro’s Tanner Poole, from Mississippi State, for the 3rd time in the past 7 days! Tanner went 2-5, with a run, 4 RBIs, a triple, and a home run. Once again, I must say that Tanner has had a super regular season, and will most likely be in the top 7 or so of ATVL’s list of top hitters in the season. He has hit 333/467/558 in 156 at-bats, with 49 runs, 27 RBIs, 7 doubles, 5 triples, 6 home runs, 21 stolen bases, and a 27/40 BB/K ratio.

Brady Lloyd, New Market: 2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, 2B, 2 BB
Chase DeMars, New Market: 2-5, 2 runs, 5 RBIs, 2B, HR
Jacob Koos, Winchester: 3-6, 2 runs, RBI, SB
Devin Gearhart, Winchester: 3-5, run, 2 RBIs
Derek Gibree, Winchester: 2-4, 2 runs, RBI, BB
Ryan Keegan, Winchester: 2-5, 2 RBIs, 2B
Nick Ward, Woodstock: 2-5, 2B
Danton Hyman, Woodstock: 2-5, run, RBI, 2B
Cole German, Woodstock: 2-3, run, 3B

Pitcher of the Day

For the 2nd time, our pitcher of the day is once again Charlottesville’s Matthew Sullivan, from Lenoir-Rhyne! Matthew threw 5Matt Sullivan Lenoir Rhyne 2016 shutout innings against Covington while allowing 2 hits, 0 walks, and striking out 6. He earned the win and a game score of 69. Matthew’s Valley League season is over, but after 7 games started this summer, he was 3-1, 2.84, with 41 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. Seems to be a strong candidate for a top 10 starter spot in ATVL’s off season lists!

Others of Note

Logan Weins, New Market: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K’s, win
Justin Camp, New Market: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, ) BB, 3 K’s (I believe he should have a save, too)

Tonight’s Games

None! We have a day off before the playoffs start on Thursday!

  1. John – New Market’s Chase DeMars also had a 3-run home run in the 17-2 blow-out of Front Royal to end the season with fireworks. And reliever Justin Crump did not earn a save, since he entered with the Rebels leading 12-2. Rebels fell one-game short of making the playoffs, but finished in great style, 8-1 over Woodstock with 3 triples and a home run, and added 2 more triples vs. Front Royal. Can’t remember another team hitting 5 triples in 2 games.
