The #2 starting pitcher in the 2015 Valley League season is Steven Ridings, from Charles Town and Messiah College!
Steven was superb for the Cannons in 2015, going 3-1, 2.17, with 46 hits, 7 walks, and 60 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings. The 6-foot-3 righthander had a 1.16 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9, and 11.8 K/9. Steven led the league in strikeouts- he was the only pitcher to reach a total of 60. Steven’s best start was on July 13th at Front Royal, when he threw 8 innings and allowed only 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and struck out a whopping 15 batters. In fact, Steven struck out double digits of opposing batters in 4 starts out of 7.
The senior sports management major has played three full seasons at Messiah. As a freshman in 2013, he went 3-4, 2.16, with 17 walks, 55 hits, and 55 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings. His 2014 was not quite up to his freshman level, as he went 4-3, 3.99, with 61 hits, 10 walks, and 37 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings.
He had a solid junior year in 2015, going 4-4, 3.84, with 56 hits, 23 walks, and 52 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings. And then he came to the Valley, and had an excellent season! Maybe Steven can get a look from a major league organization after his senior year. If not, perhaps we’ll see him on a broadcast team someday.
Either way, congratulations on such an excellent summer, Steven!
