ATVL’s #7 hitter, Trevecca Nazarene’s Hunter Newman, is the third Front Royal Cardinal on the list, following in the footsteps of Shell McCain and Nick Sinay.
Newman finished the regular season with rate stats of 324/352/582, along with 27 runs, 55 hits, 17 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs, 42 RBIs, and a 6/24 BB/K ratio in 170 at-bats. He stole 5 bases without being caught for good measure. Hunter finished tied for 2nd in hits in the regular season, 1st in doubles, tied for 2nd in triples, tied for first in home runs (with Woodstock’s Esteban Puerta), 2nd in RBIs, and ranked 2nd with 99 total bases. That’s quite the performance! Hunter’s best game was probably on June 6th against New Market, when he went 4-4, with a run, 2 triples, and 2 RBIs.
The current junior has also raked for the Trojans. As a freshman in 2013, Hunter hit .348, and added 19 doubles, 6 home runs, 56 RBIs, and scored 59 runs. Here is a list of his post-season awards: NCCAA All-American, NCCAA Mid-East Region Player of the Year, Great Midwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, and G-MAC All-Conference infielder. Whew.
In 2014 as a sophomore, Newman hit .343, with 19 doubles, 4 triples, and 8 home runs (pretty close to his freshman year’s production, eh?). He was named to the G-MAC All-Conference 2nd team at 3rd base.
So, I wonder how Hunter will produce as a junior. Maybe in the .340 range, with 20 doubles, 10 home runs….
At any rate, congratulations for your excellent season, Hunter!
