Welcome to the night of the big inning! As I perused the box scores from last night, I was struck at how many “crooked numbers” were put up.
So let’s take a look- only one of the series ended last night, which means there are THREE elimination games tonight!
- Front Royal 7, Strasburg 5: In the 3rd inning, the Cardinals scored 6 times, and the Express scored 5. Then only one run was scored the rest of the game! The big blow for Front Royal was a Ryan Cleveland grand slam. Zarley Zalewski added 3 hits, Nick Sinay had 2, and Logan Longwith may have been the player of the game- he threw 3 shutout innings, not even allowing a baserunner, and struck out 5 to earn a tough save for the Cards. Joe Camp had two hits for the Express, and reliever Nick Gollin threw 3 1/3 shutout innings himself. Game three is tonight in Front Royal!
- Staunton 7, Charles Town 4: The Braves had their big inning in the second, when they put up 5 runs on a Bobby San Martin RBI single, and then Derek Gallello and Gunnar McNeill both hit 2-run doubles. Stephen Kerr and William Endris each had two hits for the Cannons, who were unable to come back from the fateful 2nd inning. The Braves got an interesting start from Dylan Horne, who allowed 11 baserunners in 6 2/3 innings, but struck out a huge 13 batters- he got 65% of his outs by strikeout! Derek Shifflett threw 1 1/3 clean innings in relied, and then Daniel Bridgeman struck out the side in the 9th inning to ensure (save) the Braves’ victory. Steven Ridings gave up only 1 unearned run in his 4 innings of relief for the Cannons. The elimination game 3 will be in Staunton tonight!
- Covington 4, Harrisonburg 2: The Jacks stayed alive by scoring 3 runs in the first inning, and then hanging on for a 2-run victory over the top-seeded Turks. Matt Picucci earned the win with 6 solid innings, and Cody Strayer threw a shutout 9th for the save. Blake Edwards, Jose Carrera, and Demetrius Moorer all had 2 hits for the Jacks. Matt Rose had 2 base knocks for the Turks, while Luke Scherzer threw 2 shutout innings in relief. Boone Mokry was saddled with the loss. Elimination game in Harrisonburg tonight!
- Waynesboro 10, Aldie 4: The Generals used a 7-run 5th inning to send the Senators home for the summer. In the fateful 5th, Mike Marcinko singled in a run, a run scored on a passed ball, Garrett Russini walked one in, Eugene Vazquez emptied the bases with a triple, and then Kyle Pitts singled him in. That was all the Generals needed to ensure a place in the semifinals. Zach Williamson threw a very solid 5 innings to earn the win, while Humberto Delatorre got the loss. Joe Giacchino had 4 hits, and Matt Malacane had 3 in the losing effort for the Senators. Waynesboro now awaits for the conclusion of the other series.
